The Siena Saints (0-0,2-1) look to bounce back from a tough loss against Temple this Tuesday night at 7 pm against the Delaware Fightin’ Blue Hens (0-0,1-2). The game will also feature Kenny Hasbrouck in the pregame ceremonies as Siena will reveal their 2008-2009 MAAC Championship Banner inside the Times Union Center.
This is the team’s third non-conference game to start the season and second opponent from the Colonial Athletic Association, following Northeastern. They have three players averaging over ten points per game: Franklin (16.7), Jackson 15.3), and Ubiles (14.3). Rossiter leads the team with 10.7 rebounds a game, while Moore averages 8.3 assists. So far Siena has mostly been a second half team, putting up 25 more points after halftime than in the first half. One statistic that may have surprised many fans before the season began is that the Saints are making less than three 3-pointers per game. The Saints hope to enter the Philly Hoop Group Classic over the Thanksgiving weekend with a victory on Tuesday.
Besides having one of the best team names in all of college sports, the Delaware Fightin’ Blue Hens have undergone a tough non-conference schedule thus far this year. They opened their season with a twenty point loss to Temple and followed it with a sixteen point loss to Bucknell. While the Saints were playing Temple on Saturday, the Blue Hens had their hands full beating Pennsylvania 97-94 in double overtime. This will be Delaware’s second road game in a streak of five in a row. This team relies heavily upon their guard play. They are led by 5’11” junior Jawan Carter who is first in minutes (38.7) and ppg (23.0). Guards Alphonso Dawson and D.J. Boney also both contribute over ten ppg. The frontcourt is pretty young with 6’8” sophomore Hakim McCullar and 6’7” freshman Kelvin McNeil.
A big factor will be Siena’s ability to put their loss to Temple behind them and not underestimate this team. They may have missed a chance to be ranked on a national level, but the Saints will need to use this game as a starting point in building their resume back up.
