This year’s team, similar to last year’s, has 4 players that can drop 20+ points any given night. There’s always one, but is there one that can take over on command? You look at this team, and it’s got to be Edwin Ubiles. In limited action this year, is FG% numbers are way down, granted, now he’s drawing the better defenders as Kenny was last season (though not every possession).
Last season, at the Old Spice Classic, all the buzz was around Kenny Hasbrouck and his future in basketball. In Siena’s two disappointing losses this year, they’ve been lacking both a bench, and that Kenny guy who can step up and take over. Example– Kenny in the Ohio State game. He knew it was his time to step up and hit shots, the second chance drive to the basket late, and the deep corner 3. How about when Kenny went off at Marist for 35 points?
Granted, the style that Kenny played with is not Edwin’s natural style. Sure, he can score, and can create for himself, but Ubiles is an unselfish player (look at his A/TO ratio over his career). He’s going to need to learn to adjust that, not only for his own chances at NBA looks, but more importantly for his team.
Edwin has been so effective with his mid-range jumper, this has always been his most impressive aspect to me. Fran needs to get Edwin the ball to the right or left of the foul line, right at about 13-15 feet and let his smooth shot take over. There was a time in Edwin’s career that he was a lock at that shot every time he went up. I think getting that back for him could be the confidence boost that he needs.
