Siena is running into the same problem they had last year– a cold start to the season from the stripe.
In an article posted by Pete Iorizzo yesterday, he spoke with head coach Fran McCaffery about the team’s free throw woes.
“It’ll get worked out,” McCaffery said. “We have to get some more attempts, especially Moore and Ubiles. I’m not worried about those two guys shooting free throws. I would run inbounds plays to get them the ball late in the game.”
I find myself uneasy with Ubiles in that spot. What if I told you that Edwin Ubiles’ numbers from the FT line have increasingly declined over the course of his college career? Sure, he only has 21 attempts this season, but as a freshman he shot 72%, 70% as a sophomore, and finished up last year at 64%. Comparatively, Moore’s numbers aren’t better– 55%, 71%, 65%.
Rossiter was Siena’s best FT shooter last year at 79% on 119 attempts. It’s a little unorthodox when your center is leading your team in FT%. Kudos to Clarence Jackson, he’s 20 of 25 from the free throw line this season. He and Kyle Downy have shown the most promise of the guards in the FT department.
