Clarence Jackson has stepped in nicely in his new starter role for the shooting guard position. He is averaging 14.2 ppg and nearly 2 steals per game. Jackson’s biggest contributions have come from behind the arc. His 38% from three point land is the best on the team (though that isn’t saying much), and he has made over twice as many 3’s than the next highest Saints player. Without a doubt, Siena’s record wouldn’t be the same if it had not been for some key Jackson performances when he seemed to take over the game. He has also shown he can score against strong programs by putting up solid scoring numbers against Temple (17) and Georgia Tech (19). When Jackson needs a breather, Kyle Downey is usually the first choice off the bench. Downey is leading all bench players in minutes per game (14.8) and ppg (4.9). His dribbling abilities make him an asset in complimenting Moore to break down defensive pressure. Coach Fran McCaffery states that Kyle’s initial struggles with outside shooting are due to coming off a lingering back injury from last season. Downey definitely has the potential to be a deep-ball threat, especially in catch and shoot scenarios during fast breaks.

Due to his size, athleticism, and outside shooting skills Edwin Ubiles is certainly a hybrid player who can play multiple positions within the course of a game. While many expected Ubiles to dominate right out the gate, a series of nagging injuries has prevented this from happening. While his 12.4 ppg may not be on par with his offensive talent, there have been decent stretches in games where Edwin could not be stopped. Ubiles is coming off back to back 19 point efforts against Iona and Northern Iowa, and these numbers will hopefully continue as his health improves. Owen Wignot has done a more than serviceable job substituting in for the small forward position. One noticeable development has been his shooting range as he has made the most 3’s out of the bench players. His jumping skills have been well-documented, but he is taking the steps toward being a much more complete basketball player.
