Kenny Hasbrouck, Fran McCaffery’s first recruit after reaching Siena, signed an NBA contract with the Heat Tuesday. We track down the experts to give us their insights on how the Siena product will fit in with the Heat.
Kenny Hasbrouck completed a long journey that started at Siena with NBA dreams and his dream is just beginning as an NBA player signing to a 10-day contract with the Heat.
Hasbrouck was Fran McCaffery’s first recruit signed as coach of the Siena Saints.
Hasbrouck impressed with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, scoring 16.9 points per game after rehabbing from a rib injury that held him out of preseason camp.
Hasbrouck takes the roster spot of Rafer Alston who was suspended for the remained of the season.
Hasbrouck went undrafted last year but impressed the Heat over the summer until hurting his rib. Hasbrouck told the South Florida Sun Sentinel that he did not expect to make the roster.
“I was hoping it would happen,” said Hasbrouck. “Honestly, I didn’t know they were going to make the move until the summertime.”
Heat Head Coach Erik Spoelstra said, to the Miami Herald, that the 23 year-old Hasbrouck is an intriguing prospect.
“He impressed us more and more each week. We didn’t want to cut him — he got hurt right before training camp,” Spoelstra said. “He’s got a strong body, a knack for getting into the paint and he improved his shooting during the summer.
Kevin Pelton of Basketball Prospectus said Hasbrouck appears to be a long term project for Miami.
“Hasbrouck appears to be a long-term play for the Heat,” Pelton said. “Miami appears to like his future at point guard and wants to keep him around.”
Meanwhile Pelton said he is interested to see if his skills will develop in the NBA game to play point guard.
“The lone NBA-quality skills he demonstrated at Siena was his ability to create his own shot and his ability to force steals,” Pelton said. “The conversion to the point is not an easy one to make as a professional.”
Pelton said he would not be surprised if Hasbrouck was inactive, depending on if the Heat want to carry a third point guard on the roster.
