The Saints earned their first win in MAAC play on Friday night, beating the Fairfield Stags 73-60 at the Times Union Center on Friday night despite playing six scholarship players.
Siena led Fairfield 32-30 at halftime and, after tying the game at 38, went on an 8-1 run that the Saints would keep for the rest of the game.
Senior Kyle Downey led the Saints with a team-high 19 points and a team-high 5 assists. Junior O.D. Anosike recorded his 10th straight double-double with 13 points and a team-high 15 rebounds. Anosike fouled out with just over two minutes to go making it the first game he fouled out in this season.
Freshman Rob Poole added 13 points off the bench and made 4 of 5 three pointers as Siena’s only bench contributor. Freshman Evan Hymes started and scored 10 points after scoring a team-high 22 in the Saints loss to Iona on Tuesday.
Seniors Owen Wignot contributed with 12 points and one three pointer and Brandon Walters had 6 points and 3 rebounds to go along with 2 blocks.
The Saints shot 26-41 (63.4%) from the field for the game and made eight three pointers. Siena excelled on the defensive end, allowing the Stags to shoot just 7 for 40 (17.5%) from two-point range. Fairfield shot 13 for 29 from three. Fairfield’s Desmond Wade led all scorers with 27 points and seven three pointers.
Siena’s 13 point win over the Stags is their largest margin of victory since beating Loyola (MD) 76-59 on January 28, 2011.
