We’ve seen Duke take down Butler for a national title, their first since 2001. In the Saints world, well, we’ve got a new head coach in Mitch Buonaguro. Pete Iorizzo is reporting that Andrew Francis will head to Iowa to help McCaffery recruit. Speaking of recruiting, that will be Buonaguro’s next task– re-recruiting Basabe and Berdine.

Mitch, 56, was Fran McCaffery’s top assistant at Siena and is very highly regarded in the eyes of the players. Buonaguro received an endorsement from McCaffery when Athletic Director John D’Argenio asked for his opinion. Mitch interviewed with the Siena staff this weekend at the Final Four. Among the other candidates were Northeastern’s Bill Coen, who also interviewed with the Siena staff.

Buonaguro has been outspoken that he would love this job. He comes to the helm with over 30 years of experience in the business. Not only that, but he has coached a MAAC team to the Tournament before. Buonaguro coached Fairfield University from 1985-91, and in his first season led his team to a 24-7 record. If you haven’t already, read his biography, it’s impressive.

According to Pete’s blog, Andrew Francis will know today whether or not he will remain at Siena, or head to Iowa. Nothing has been confirmed as of yet.

Expect a press conference in the next few days. Mitch is a good hire for Siena, you get the feeling that he’s going to be around for a while.

Asst. Coach Andrew Francis worked with him prior to practice on controlling his body.
